This week we looked at the elder brother in Jesus’ story. It’s easy to overlook the fact that he was just as wrong and just as lost as his younger brother. But a closer look reveals the wedge that his self-righteous attitude drove between himself and his father. Something to think about: have you ever been like the older brother, imagining that you have done everything right in God’s sight? Jesus’ story is a reminder that only God can make us righteous.

Luke 15.28-30: “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’ (NLT)
