Luke 4 – Let God Be God! (Week 3)

This week we follow Jesus to the synagogue in His hometown of Nazareth. While there, Jesus read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1, 2). Isaiah spoke of bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming release to captives, recovery of sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Jesus then announced that these words were fulfilled in their hearing. Jesus Himself was and is the fulfillment of these words. He is the one who brings Good News to the world, proclaims freedom from sin and death, and provides healing. All of this happens through the cross.

Luke 4.18-19: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (NRSV)
