Gospel Matters-Lesson 3

In Galatians 2, Paul describes a disagreement he had with Simon-Peter (Paul refers to him as Cephas, which is the name Simon in Aramaic). The disagreement was over the fact that Simon-Peter began to separate himself from the Gentile followers of Jesus, effectively creating a division among the believers. Such divisions are contrary to what Jesus wants for His followers, and can be devastating for a community of believers. Paul rightly confronted Simon-Peter in order to bring the division to an end. Paul’s reason for doing so was simple: He didn’t want divisions to keep people from experiencing the Good News about Jesus.

Jesus wants you to experience the Gospel too. This can best happen when there’s unity of message and mission among the family of believers that is the church.

Galatians 2.19-21: For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” (NIV)
