Psalm 51 is a lament psalm. A lament psalm is a type of psalm that is like a cry for help. In the case of Psalm 51, the cry came from David, the king of Israel, after a spiritual crisis. David’s words reveal the depth of his sin in this instance. In the midst of David’s sense of being lost, we see God’s grace and forgiveness in action.
Like David, we too have sinned against God, who is just in judging us. But just as David experienced the gift of forgiveness, we too receive the gift of forgiveness through the cross of Christ Jesus.
