There is no better place to begin this look at the Book of Psalms than with Psalm 1. Psalm 1 is a wisdom psalm, used for imparting wisdom and instruction to the reader. The wisdom shared in Psalm 1 is the reality that we are never truly happy apart from God. It is only through a relationship with God that we find true meaning, purpose, and happiness in life. God calls us to experience this meaning, purpose, and happiness through the cross of Jesus.

Psalm 1.1-3: Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. (NRSV)
